Sunday 23 February was a breezy, cool day, but not a drop of precipitation impeded the Friends’ second New Year work day in Conway Rec. An energetic team of 17 tackled a host of jobs, warm cuppas and Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

Here are some highlights:
• the wonderful learning circle mosaic was washed and polished. It looks a treat.

• the evergreen hedge along Pen row was tidied and beautified with a new ‘window’.
• a strapping new barley boom was built and launched. Perch on, duckies!
• Trees were coppiced in the Dell to allow more light to enter. The cut branches may be used to make protective fencing while the twigs and catkins will provide body for bug hotels (see below).

• Also in the Dell, weeds were lifted and new tarpaulin was pegged in to guard a pathway through the fruit tree patch.
• The pathway alongside Court 5 was widened and cleared to improve access to the Dell.

• Litter was picked from the entire Rec and binned – happily there wasn’t much!
• Logs cut from the diseased oak were drilled and relocated to create de luxe double rooms for the planned bug hotels.

We’ll identify more work dates for the Spring months and look forward to seeing our regular and new volunteers donning their gardening gloves. Rec away!
