Workday 22nd March 2026

After an unprecedented February wash-out, our volunteers turned out in numbers on Sunday 22 March for the first work day of the new year. We had a full job-list and every task was tackled.

  • The mosaics and information panels were meticulously scrubbed by Hannah and Eshe.
  • Eric used his fork to give our ancient oaks some gentle aeration and also brushed, shovelled and barrowed to produce spotless paths.
  • Jeremy had worked to renew the damaged sign protecting the wildlife space at the back of the pond. He kindly reinstalled the sign at its strategic location.
  • Mick, Fran and Martin created a brand-new barley boom and launched it to continue the work of keeping the pond water algae-free and healthy. They also removed some unwanted materials, including tennis balls, sticks and a very muddy bollard.
  • Jo joined us with her pondlife specialist daughter Georgie to discuss why the newt and toad populations have diminished.
    • While water works proceeded, the male Canada and Egyptian Geese took it in turns to remonstrate with each other about who owned the pond, a pair of Mallards cruised peacefully around and tiny moorchicks ventured tentatively from the safety of their bulrush home.
  • Julia, Marion and two Tonys worked away at clearing the flower bed that runs from Cannon Road to compost corner. A big part of the work was removing brambles to give the flowers and shrubs more breathing space.
  • Chris worked his socks off clearing, tidying and barrowing. Ilona planted and nurtured growth in other beds and wildflower corners.
  • Derek mowed the grassy patch by the path linking Cannon and Conway Roads.
  • Huw and Dan arrived early for a thorough litter pick, while Angela and Finn collected and barrowed fallen branches, cuttings and prunings.
  • Philip, Graham and Keith tidied the spaces and plants around the tennis clubhouse.
  • We squeezed in a break, queuing in orderly fashion for hot drinks and cake prepared by Mary, then relaxing and chatting in the welcome sunshine, where Hannah showed us her beautiful design depicting Conway Rec as an oasis of peace, life and tranquility.
  • A Sunday well spent. Heartfelt thanks to everyone.
