Workday 14th September 2025

With the weather starting to turn, our sturdy Reccers turned out to offer TLC and more to Conway Rec. The timing was perfect, with weather still and dry for the whole morning. Later, the wind and rain made up for lost time.

The day saw a major step forward, as we had lashed out on a second battery for our cordless mower. The dampness meant mowing was tough going, but Gary put in two hours of hard work to make a sizeable grassy area look cared for.

Barry and Julia used a strimmer and various other cutting tools to clear and tidy the rather messy patch at the front of tennis court 5, while Sue, David and Marion worked hard to remove unwanted brambles and plant a sapling on the slope under the ancient oaks. Caroline and our newest team-member Despina focused on making the patches either side of the path at the Clubhouse end of the pond look respectable.

The learning circle mosaic and information panels were washed and polished by Hannah and Eshe, who also completed the most impeccable of litter-picks. Eric worked tirelessly to remove suckers spoiling the grassy area alongside Court 3 and went on to complete a major trimming of the enthusiastic evergreen hedge that can intrude on the path between Cannon and Conway Roads. Tony also did some serious trimming of the deciduous hedge, our new long-handled device making it possible for him to reach new heights.

Antony and Jazleen helped everyone by sweeping, gathering and barrowing green waste from all corners to the collection point for Enfield Parks team.

It would hardly be a work day without a brew, and Mary ensured that hot drinks and choccy biscuits were served at break time. Thanks, everyone. As ever, your ideas, energy and company generated an event that was so much more than a work day. And thanks, too, to team members who couldn’t be with us on this occasion and to local residents who support the work through donations and in other ways.
